From a heart of thankfulness

Thank you all who supported out bigger vision of helping out the Vancouver community by donating a bag of food. We were able to raise over $500 of food for those less fortunate and our Body In Balance community really made a big impact. I know you hear my speak it all the time, but I have a true vision of getting our community healthier, and it starts with hearts of gold. It's one thing to have the body in good physical shape so we can do and enjoy the things of life. When we are in a great state of thankfulness and generosity is where we can see tremendous growth. This long weekend gave me a great opportunity to reflect on the many blessings our good Lord has given me. I have a beautiful wife (as I'm sure you would agree) a great family wellness practice, a wonderful son, and one on the way. God has given me a roof over my head and people to serve. What more could I ask for? I know it is hard times with people who have unfairly lost their jobs, and I am so grateful to have

Will Work For Food

It's time for our annual food drive at Body In Balance. The time where we can give back to those less fortunate. Here's how we are helping: 1) If you bring in a bag of food before November 19th, we will exchange it for a complimentary adjustment. So that we can give everyone an opportunity to get adjusted, we are holding a special day to do the adjustmets, Saturday, November 21st, starting at 9am. 2) If you refer a friend or family member in we will exchange their bag of food for a complimentary exam, including consultation, chiropractic analysis, computer stress tetsing, and x-rays if needed. The clock is ticking, and the more bags of food we donate, the more our community will be served. So let's kick it in high gear, and help some folks out. Blessings, Dr. Scott

Life is all a balancing act

As I interact with more and more people telling me their lives are out of control, I stop and assess my own life. I am married with a 2 year old, run a family wellness practice, and still have bills Yet, I make time to exercise, eat right, take personal time, date night time, and get adjusted. As I look myself in the mirror, I feel that if I can do it, anyone can. I put my shoes on one at a time, just like the rest of you. The only true difference is that I have spent so much time educating myself on the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. One must note that it is still a struggle. What I have found to work is to actually schedule my workouts, adjustments, date nights, and so on. As sterile as this sounds, I am able to get way more done in my off time and have set up my schedule to allow me to have time for the things in life that I want to do. If I am not the best me, I can not serve you to the fullest, cannot be the best husband, friend, or father. So to a certain extent, my heal

Swine Flu: Nothing to Sneeze At

This country has got me going crazy! Swine Flu this, vaccinate that. I even heard that some hospitals are making it mandatory for their employees to get the H1N1 (swine flu) shot. But you better believe that if the employee gets the flu after that shot, the hospital will not pay for lost wages. It just doesn't make sense. We are still so caught on a quick fix society, that we are driving ourselves deeper into sickness and despair. Many Americans do not know that we have been through pandemics like this before. Like the Spanish flu which killed over 20 million people. Interestingly enough, In Davenport, Iowa 50 medical doctors cared for 4,953 cases with 274 deaths. Also in Davenport, 150 chiropractors saw 1,635 cases with only one death. In the state of Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths, a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were seen by chiropractors with a loss of only six patients – a loss of o

Health Care Class on YouTube

Finally, I have posted my newest Health Care Class on YouTube for those who cannot attend them. For your convenience, just click on the link to get started. Start with video 1-4. www.youtube.com/drscottvanc Yours In Health, Dr. Scott

Chiropractic helps with cerebral palsy

I just have to share this recent research article done on a 2 year old who was told he would never walk again because of his cerebral palsy... guess what happened? http://www.atypon-link.com/MCY/doi/abs/10.5555/pmfh.2009.2009.3.1a Serving your family's health needs, Dr. Scott

Beat the Heat With Water

Since this week's heat crisis, we've seen temperatures of over 106 degrees. While it may sound self-evident, it is imperative to drink twice as much water to cool your body down. You see, as we heat, our body's thermostat in the nervous system kicks on the A.C. but the exhaust has to go somewhere--> That's why we sweat. In order for this fancy A.C. unit to keep running, it needs regular refridgerant so that it doesn't over heat. I've been hearing many stories this week of how our members' car air conditioning has busted, in which it could have been prevented with regular maintenance care. Since chiropractic works at bettering the flow of your nervous system, a body will have a better chance at regulating its temperature when it is well adjusted. Take Away: drink more water and get adjusted!! By the way, our patient appreciation day on 7-23 was a great success. We had a huge party and many people signe dup for care. Win-win in my book. Blessings, Dr. Scott

Patient Appreciation Day

For the first time, Body In Balance is having a Patient Appreciation Day, where we say "Thanks" for being great practice members. We will be having food, drinks, free chair massages, and of course, free adjustments if you bring in a friend for an office tour. Times are tough these days, and so we'd like to thank you for maintaining your body through the chiropractic lifestyle, rather than resort to drugs and surgery. We feel honored to serve you in this matter. Date: July 23rd Time: 10am-1pm Where: Office of Body In Balance Chiropractic and Wellness Center What to bring: A friend or family member who has not been adjusted before Thank you for your continued support Dr. Scott

What's In Your Wallet

I find it more difficult these days to try and explain the difference between sick care and health care. We have falsified the meaning of "health care" benefits when in actuality, they cover services for sickness. Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place that my monthly premium gets used, but I feel that I should get a break because I haven't been to my primary care physician (in fact, I don't think I even have one) in ever. I would never drop my coverage in case a catastrophe occurs, but come on, give me a break. The bigger challenge is differentiating what I do as an actual Health Care Provider to those sick care providers. Some insurance companies have policies where they allow a certain amount of chiropractic coverage ( usually only enough to cover what I like to call "Relief Care"). Once insurance runs out, I am stuck trying to explain that the insurance company also does not pay for other health products, such as gym memberships, vitamins, wh

Strcuture, Function, Health

So I sit awake at night thinking of crystal clear ways to communicate that Chiropractic is much more than neck and back pain. It's about promotion of health and wellness. STRUCTURE If the structure of the spine is misaligned, it will put abnormal pressure on the spinal nerve. Since that nerve controls the function of the body, we can easily say that structure is related to function. FUNCTION The job of the nervous, as per Gray's Anatomy, is to control and regulate the body, so that it functions well. HEALTH If everything in your body is functionally well, you are healthy. When your brain has clear channels to communicate to your body, correct messages are sent. When there are obstrcutions like spinal subluxations (mis-aligments), the messages get distorted; therfore, the strcuture of our spine can be related to our overal health. TAKE AWAY That's why Chiropractic has such great results with non muscular problems, like IBS, asthma, ulcers, high blood pressure, anxiety, ADD,

Wellness Workshop

I just finished one of my beloved Wellness Workshops and it was one of the most fun experiences I had yet. We had a group of new and veteran practice members, but all were up for the challenge of the class. You see, after being in school for most of my life, I figured the last thing someone wants to do at the end of the day is listen to me "lecture" about eating right and exercising. So I created a workshop which requires active participation from our practice members. Not only does it provide a sound educational experience on how to find health and more importantly stay healthy in today's society, but it is fun and entertaining for the members. If you don't believe me, ask my recent graduates how bad they were laughing at a few of my stories. Health and wellness can be so much more fun than we make it. It starts with a great positive mental attitude. Do you see half empty or half full. Do think of that device that beeps in the morning as an alarm clock or an opportu

Welcome to Dr. Scott's blog

Hi all who are reading, After many thoughts run through my head of how I can educate others to live healthy and move towards a wellness lifestyle, I finally decided to create a blog. My upfront caveat is that my writing style is much like a text message. My grammar is bad, and you may not judge me for not having an English degree. So put on your boots and strap up, because this is going to be one wild ride. I may offend you, be suggestive, raise opinions, but the end goal is to make you more aware of how we were designed to live as humans on this earth. Please stay tuned for more blog posts (is that what they're called?) -Dr. Scott
